Adjunct Prof. pays DVC Academic Affairs Courtesy Call

ngairaOn Thursday 18th May 2017, Visiting Adjunct Professor, John Patrick Gallagher paid a courtesy call to Prof. Josephine Ngaira, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs. Prof Gallagher highlighted that he was impressed with the quality of programmes being offered by the School of Computing and Informatics.

When asked on how he felt about our computing students, Prof Gallagher reported that he was much impressed with the kind of students we have. Having participated in defense of 4th year projects as a panelist, Prof Gallagher informed the DVC ASA that, he was happy with the wide range of programming skills the students were exhibiting. “The program is right on track” he added. On her part, Prof Ngaira welcomed Prof. Gallagher and noted that, his (Prof. Gallagher) coming was one way of having Internationalization of MMUST products. “We are happy for your coming as a professor of computer science” She added. A number of suggestions were raised on how to continue entrenching quality in our teaching and learning. This included but not limited to: the need to have Senior staff such as Professors and doctors teaching first years, need to have god and working computer laboratories, havingprogrammeleaders are senior members and who therefore mentor junior staff, need to have internship opportunities for the students after their final year of study, besides having linkages with industries for internship opportunities,and forging for more collaborations with other universities outside Kenya. Prof. Ngaira praised the leadership of School of Computing and Informatics for ensuring there is quality in processes and staffing and for entrenching the Commission for University guidelines in their operations. The School of Computing was represented by Dr. Kelvin Omieno, who is also the Ag Dean for the School, Dr. Mutua Stephen, who is the Ag Chairman on Department of Computer Science and Dr. Daniel Otanga, who is also the Ag Chairman for the department of Information Technology.
